Local Roundup: Tracy girls go for free-throw title

Tracy girls Isabella Lawrence, 12, and Mary Fabris, 11, will head to Fresno this weekend for the Knights of Columbus State Free Throw Championships. It’s the second year in a row the pair has qualified for the state level of the competition.

Lawrence is a member of the Tracy Storm basketball team, and Fabris plays AAU ball. Both compete in Catholic Youth Organization leagues, as well.

The girls each took first place at the Tracy Knights of Columbus competition Jan. 23 at the St. Bernard’s Catholic School gymnasium and went on to win the district-level contest Feb. 21 in Manteca. They qualified for the state competition with first-place finishes Feb. 28 in Lodi.

Today, they will represent the Knights of Columbus San Joaquin Chapter and Knights of Columbus Council 4041

Fastpitch team wins USSSA tourney

All American Sports Academy’s 10-and-under girls fastpitch softball team, including Tracy players Amanda Hernandez, Jalen Ervin and Rachel Cid, won the United States Specialty Sports Association Luck of the Irish tournament last weekend at Big League Dreams sports park in Manteca.

The eight-team tournament included squads from Bakersfield, Tulare, Salinas and Sacramento.

All-American went 2-1 in pool play Saturday, with wins over Salinas Storm and Central Cal Intensity and a loss to Mizuno All-American.

On Sunday, the girls from Tracy went 3-0, beating Tri County Smash, 5-2; Central Valley Freeze, 8-0; and Mizuno All-American, 4-1, for their first 10U tournament championship.

The win qualifies the team for the USSSA state championship tournament in Manteca on July 4 and for the USSSA World Series Fastpitch Championships in Orlando, Fla., on July 24.

Classic gymnast takes third at state

Classic Gymnastics Level 4 gymnasts Matthew Garay and Joshua Burdios, both 8, competed this past weekend at Northern California Boys Gymnastics Association state championship in Lemoore. It was the final Level 4 gymnastics competition of the season.

The highlight for the Classic team was Garay’s third-place finish on the vault, in which he competed against 41 gymnasts in his age group.

Classic Gymnastics’ Level 5 boys, Cameron Higgins, 8, and Elisha Souza, 10, will try to qualify for the Level 5 state championship Sunday in Petaluma.

West grad’s team takes another win

West High alumna Michelle Hurlock, class of 2007, helped her University of California, Davis, Aggies gymnastics team to a win Sunday at home against Texas Woman’s University and the University of California, Berkeley.

Hurlock scored 9.7 on the vault, contributing to her team’s top score of 194.6. Texas scored 192.825, and Cal scored 190.65.
