Patrick Thompson wanted to score just one more touchdown before putting his West High school football days behind him.

He got his wish on the last play of Saturday night’s Lions All-Star game at Modesto Junior College.

The North team, including players from West, Tracy and Kimball high schools, already had the game wrapped up with a 24-0 lead over the South, when running back Thompson got the ball as the clock ran out.

That’s when he saw a gap in the line on the right side and broke through for a 40-yard touchdown run to make it a 30-0 win.

“It was like everything I’ve dreamed for to play in the all-star game, and to score the last touchdown in the final seconds — it’s amazing,” Thompson said.

The 2012 West High graduate, bound for Colorado State University in Pueblo this fall, was one of four local players on the North team in the 39th annual Lions All-Star Football game.

Also playing for the North was Thompson’s West teammate Elisha Mitchell, Tracy High’s Pablo Ceja and Kimball High’s Chris Sampino.

Also selected for the team was West’s Devon Hutchins, but he opted out of the game because of an injury.

The North team’s 30-0 win is the first shutout in the annual game since 1993, and puts the North — which includes many teams from the San Joaquin County area — at 24-14-1 in the history of the game. The South team includes many squads from Stanislaus County and the southern part of the San Joaquin Valley.

The North had a hard-fought 10-0 lead at the half, including a 30-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter from Stagg quarterback Brian Wood to his brother Ryan Wood. Ryan Wood was later named the game’s most valuable player, and Brian Wood was offensive player of the game.

Escalon High’s Gino Franceschetti kicked the point-after, and also booted a 20-yard field goal at the end of the first half.

Franceschetti scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter, and Stagg’s Maurice Boyd scored on a 60-yard run in the fourth quarter to make it a 24-0 game.

Thompson’s role for most of the game was to do what he did best at West, where he would bust through the line to grind out offensive gains. He shared running back duties with Stagg’s Boyd and Edison’s Kermit Knight, limiting his carries on the all-star team.

“I see these people throughout the season. These guys are really good, and it’s crazy to all get on one team and do our thing and win,” he said.

Sampino, who played tight end most of the game, is the first Kimball player to make the all-star team. He was eager to preview the kind of talent he will see in college football in the fall at San Joaquin Delta College.

“Coming into this game I was a little bit nervous. It’s the best of the best from all around California, so I was expecting the best,” he said. “I contended, and I competed.”

Ceja, who is looking at Las Positas College in Livermore or Delta College to continue playing football, was at offensive guard for most of the game.

“To know that I’m the only one from our school (on the all-star team) makes me feel like I have to represent even more and try harder,” he said.

He added that he was impressed with how quickly the North team bonded during a week of workouts at Stagg High in Stockton.

“It took two days, and we all got along just fine,” he said. “Considering we only practiced together for a week, we were pretty solid.”

Mitchell, also planning to play at Delta College, played safety for most of the game. In addition to the tough workouts, Mitchell said he was out to have fun.

“This game was a blast,” he said. “I’m proud of what we did. I wish we could play every week, but it was fun.”
