Lammersville leaders prep for MH High hirings

MOUNTAIN HOUSE — Lammersville Unified School District officials are preparing to beef up the staff of the new Mountain House High School, which is under construction on Mustang Boulevard in the southern portion of the community.

The next position filled will be either an assistant principal or a student counselor.

Principal Ben Fobert, who is overseeing the hiring process, said his ideal choice would be an applicant for the assistant principal position who also has counseling experience.

"We’re looking for the biggest bang for our buck," he said.

Fobert said the first step was getting the Lammersville Unified School District Governing Board to approve job descriptions, which occurred Sept. 18.

A job description for a campus security supervisor was also approved Sept. 18, but that position will be filled later.

"It’s a really exciting time now that we have the scope of the project and laid some of the groundwork," Fobert said. "We started by seeing the skeleton for awhile, and now the walls and drywall are going up and it’s looking like a school."

An assistant principal, according to the job description, supervises students and staff members while enforcing the policies of the governing board.

Applicants should have a Master of Arts or higher degree and at least five years’ experience in teaching, counseling, school psychology or school administration.

The salary range is $88,000 to $102,947.

A student counselor helps students accomplish three key objectives: to achieve self-understanding and self-respect, to manage social demands and academic expectations, and to set and achieve appropriate goals.

Candidates must have three years of high school teaching or counseling experience, a master’s degree and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential with authorization in counseling, according to the job description.

Fobert said the salary is expected to be the same as a teaching position — $40,000 to $75,000, depending upon experience and education.

Fobert said the next person hired, whether a counselor or an assistant principal, will help with an extensive to-do list that includes buying textbooks and furniture, creating a website and developing partnerships with community colleges.

Before classes begin in August, officials plan to get all the staff members together to create a family feeling at Mountain House High School.

"We’re going to spend a week or two building culture and setting it up," Fobert said. "Get to know one another and how we want to be different from other schools, and that needs to be brought out to a whole community of teachers."

Fobert, who was hired June 5, said the district hopes to advertise the next job opening in the next couple of weeks and fill the remaining position in the spring.

Hiring of teachers and the security supervisor is expected to begin in February or March.

The role of a security supervisor is to maintain the "safety and security of students and campus, foster a safe school culture and … promote positive behaviors by providing high visibility and interaction throughout the school," according to the job description.

At least a year’s experience working with groups of elementary, middle or high school students is required, as well as a high school diploma or its equivalent. Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule and undergo a criminal background check.

The salary range is $14.75 to $17.92 per hour.
