Ty Kelly is making the most of his promotion to AAA baseball.

The former Tracy Little League all-star, a 2006 graduate of St. Mary’s High School, has improved his batting average in the month since he moved from the Bowie (Md.) Baysox, the Baltimore Orioles’ class AA affiliate, to the Tacoma (Wash.) Rainiers, the class AAA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

Kelly was batting .283 with the Baysox. After a month with the Rainiers, he is the team’s fourth-leading batter with a .329 average and 27 base hits, including two home runs. Kelly boosted his batting average Sunday, July 28, when he went 4-for-5 against the Reno Aces, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ AAA affiliate.

The Aces won it 6-5, in spite of the Rainiers collecting 17 hits to the Aces’ 10.

Kelly landed with the Rainiers on June 30 in a trade for Seattle Mariners outfielder Eric Thames, who went to the Orioles AAA affiliate, the Norfolk (Va.) Tides. The Rainiers play in the 16-team Pacific Coast League, along with the New Orleans Zephyrs (Miami Marlins), whose roster includes Kyle Jensen, a former teammate of Kelly at St. Mary’s. The Sacramento River Cats (Oakland Athletics) and the Fresno Grizzlies (San Francisco Giants) also play in the Pacific Coast League.
