The win is a good start to the Valley Oak League season for Kimball (10-4, 1-0 VOL) because teams need only six wins to make the playoffs in the new Sac-Joaquin Section playoff format.
The top 16 teams in the power ratings at the end of the season go to the playoffs, as do any additional teams that win at least 15 total games.
Kimball coach Mike Granillo said the league is going to be competitive this season.
“I feel that any of the teams can beat any of the others on any given night,” he said. “It depends on who comes out to play. It will be a challenging year.”
East Union (4-7, 0-1 VOL) is the defending league champion and went 2-2 in last week’s Tom Hawkins/Tracy Breakfast Lions Girls Basketball Tournament, but Kimball’s girls shut down the Lancers’ offense in the first quarter to take a 23-4 lead. Kimball kept up the pressure into the fourth quarter for the win.
Other leading scorers for the Jaguars were sophomore Alexis Clark with 13 points and senior Megan Bathal, who tossed in 10 points.
