The Falcons (1-8, 0-5 Central California Athletic Alliance) now will regroup for next year, while the Knights (8-2, 5-0 CCAA) secured their place as the league champions. Brookside also will be one of the top teams in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI playoff bracket.
Millennium head coach Jayson Dias said that in a league made up of small schools he expects his team will have off-seasons like this. In this case, roles were reversed as the Falcons were league champions last year and the Knights went 2-8 in 2011.
“I think our juniors are going to be ready next year to step into their roles and be the leaders that they can be,” Dias said.
Junior quarterback Manjot Atwal added that on a team riddled with injuries the Falcons found many players who proved capable of taking on new roles.
“We had a lot of players step up this year. Our line was getting better every week,” he said.
Brookside Christian quarterback Austin Caldron threw for 354 yards, nearly all in the first half, including four touchdown passes in the first quarter and another in the second. The Knights also ran in two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 50-0 lead at the half.
The Knights opened the second half with a touchdown on a kickoff return, and scored again on a touchdown pass and on a touchdown run. They completed six of 10 2-point conversion attempts.
Millennium had 114 yards rushing. Senior running back Devon Wright covered 66 yards on 16 runs for the Falcons.
Atwal completed three of 10 passes for 29 yards, including a 17-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Malik Charles to get the Falcons into the red zone on their last drive of the game. A couple runs from sophomore running back Izaiah Williams got Millennium to the 1-yard line, but the Falcons fumbled on their last play of the game, just short of the end zone.
