A pickup driver was transported by helicopter to an area hospital after he crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer on West Schulte Road on Tuesday, May 1.

According to California Highway Patrol public information officer Adam Shelton, Levi Wolfe of Tracy was heading east on West Schulte Road in a GMC Sierra pickup shortly after 6 p.m. when he neared the Gateway Boulevard intersection, which is west of the city near the Safeway distribution center.

Shelton said a tractor-trailer had slowed to make a turn at the intersection, and Wolfe crashed into the rear of the truck, tearing the front of the pickup apart and trapping Wolfe inside.

Tracy Fire Department crews cut Wolfe free of the wreckage and closed both directions of traffic on West Schulte Road so a helicopter could land and transport Wolfe to to an area hospital.

Shelton did not release where Wolfe was flown, but said his injuries, including a broken nose, were moderate but not life-threatening.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash

All you effing jerks who wrote "texting while driving needs to stop, there are all these stupid drivers out there blaa blaa blaa..' you all can shut your effing mouths up because this can happend to anyone. You could be the "safest" driver in the world and even then something can still happen to you. You could have a blown out tire and cause an accident. All you heard was one side of the story and not the other. So why dont you think before/ research your facts before you open you freaking mouth. That truck driver did an illegal U trun on a road that clearly has a no u trun sign. Hes lucky no one got killd for his stupid mistake and by him i mean the truck driver.

I'll take Tracy city drivers over the commuters on the freeway and those in big cities. Las Vegas? Horrible!!!!

Everyone needs to remember they are operating a killing machine and be careful! Including myself.

No one in this friggin town knows how to drive. I can't tell you how many "almost accidents" I see everyday. How many jackasses who run red lights, how many who are texting or on their phones while driving. How many who don't know how to use a friggin 4 way stop sign. And then they put a ROTARY in? It's a damn nightmare! I am so sick of it and I wish the cops were around more to take care of these morons.

amlee1978 - I agree that the drivers in this town (maybe California?) are pretty poor. Tracy specific, I believe is due to the fact that we have very little traffic enforcement and over time folks will alter their driving habits. Why drive anywhere near the speed limit when you know the chance of a ticket is almost nil? I've seen you make several comments, so assume you have called the Police Chief or attended one of his recent public meetings to discuss your concerns. What was his response? He seemed receptive to all comments & suggestions when I attended the meeting at the Tracy Library. Unfortunately only a handful of residents attended, which seems typical of Tracy.

The truck made an illegal u turn from the middle lane and at an intersection that said no u turn. Didn't see the traffic in that left lane.
