Mr. Bates was born Feb. 27, 1924, in Dividend, Utah, and raised in Arizona. He served as a radioman in the U.S. Navy during World War II from February 1941 to March 1946.
A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mr. Bates also worked many years as a trucker and handyman.
He and his wife retired to Tracy from Hayward and lived in the city almost 20 years.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Juanita Osuna Bates of Stockton; four children, Martin Orville Bates, Dean Bates Jr., Dixie Lee Bates and Geri Lyn Bates; two sisters, Dixie Bates Wood of Livermore and Flo Bates Polka of Phoenix, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, LaSelle Monford Bates and Nellie Mae Jennings; and eight siblings.
Saturday’s funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1981 Chester Drive. Burial will be private.
