Tracy runner Blair Hurlock finished in eighth-place among the top high school runners in the nation at the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships in San Diego on Saturday, Dec. 14.
Hurlock, a senior at De La Salle High School in Concord, ran the 5K course at Balboa Park in 15 minutes, 24 seconds.
“I was pretty satisfied with how I did,” Hurlock said. “I was going for the top 10, so I achieved my goal.”
Hurlock said he held the lead at the 2-mile mark, but the other race leaders passed him with about a half-mile left. Race winner Grant Fisher (15:07) of Grand Blanc High School in Michigan and second-place finisher John Dressel (15:10) of Mount Spokane High School in Washington battled for the lead in the last 150 meters.
“It’s definitely one of the best races I’ve been in,” Hurlock said. “(Fisher) is a very good competitor, and it was a good race for him.”
Hurlock gained all-American status by finishing in the top 15. He is also a member of the first-place West team, which had seven of the top 12 runners. The West team had a score of 23, ahead of the Northeast (56), Midwest (64) and South (98).
