West freshman wins Rotary speech contest

Margaux Roush, a freshman at West High School, won the Tracy Sunrise Rotary speech contest Feb. 6 at Windmill Ridge Winery in Tracy.

She and four other West High students spoke on the Rotary Inter-national theme of “peace through service,” highlighting the ways Rotary service efforts create unity in the world and locally.

In addition to receiving a $125 cash prize, Margaux will represent her school and Tracy Sunrise Rotary Club in the District 5220 Area 4 contest for a chance to move on to the District 5220 contest. The district competition begins at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at Ripon Memorial Library, 333 W. Main St., in Ripon,

Finishing in second place in the Feb. 6 contest was senior Anumita Kaur. Freshman Vanesa Riley placed third, and seniors Kevin Miller and Lucy Schermesser received honorable mentions.

Scholarship offered for Portuguese students

Local high school seniors of Portuguese descent are eligible for $500 scholarships offered by Cabrillo Civic Clubs of California, a statewide organization.

The awards can be used to attend a U.S. college or university.

Lions selling corned beef dinner tickets

Tickets are on sale for the annual corned beef and cabbage dinner served by Tracy Tank Town Lions on March 16.

The event at Tracy Community Center, 950 East St., raises money for Tracy Interfaith Ministries and scholarships for local students.

No-host cocktails will begin the evening at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 and prize drawings.

Only 250 tickets will be sold, at $20 for adults and $6 for children.
