Dr. Nelson Hu, a Tracy orthodontist, will take the reins of the Tracy Rotary Club at the group’s first July meeting.
He and other officers of the Tracy service club were installed recently during the annual Tracy Rotary “kick out night” at the home of John and Karen Edwards.
Hu, who succeeds City Manager Leon Churchill as president, wants to increase club membership and expand community projects.
“Rotary is a service organization, and we will work at doing more for our town and also in Rotary’s international programs,” he said. “My main reason for joining Rotary is to serve my community and be actively involved in it.”
In the past year, the club gave more than $20,000 in college scholarships and joined with other area Rotary clubs to develop water supplies for a town in Haiti.
Tracy Rotary sponsors student Interact Clubs at Tracy and Kimball high schools.
Hu is a native of Karachi, Pakistan, and began his dental training in Pakistan before transferring to the University of Missouri at Kansas City, where he received his DDS degree in 1994.
He completed advanced training as an orthodontist at Northwestern University in Chicago in 1997. He moved to California in 2001 and has practiced in Tracy at New Smile Orthodontics for nine years.
Hu, who enjoys rowing, bicycling and sailing, and his wife, Meiling, have two children, Nathan, 13, and Mariah, 11.
Serving with Hu are Dave Tillman, president-elect; Ben Goldberg, president-nominee; Kal Waetzig, secretary; Herve Chevaillier, treasurer; and Kelly Wilson, Mark Church and Waetzig, directors.
