school’s logistics, according to Principal Brenda Scholl.
The charter school, which is being constructed by Banta School District, isn’t scheduled to open until August.
But Scholl said during the school’s monthly trustee meeting Tuesday, March 5, that 323 parents have submitted forms to send their children to the school, and www.riverislandsacademy.net had more than 1,000 hits in a single day after she conducted presentations for parents on Feb. 26.
“It’s exploding with interest,” Scholl said. “It’s exciting to share the vision of the school.”
Although enrollment numbers at the kindergarten through eighth-grade charter have yet to be finalized, officials anticipate having two classrooms for each grade level except sixth, which will have one.
Scholl said that based on registration inquiries, there are 69 students applying for kindergarten; 58 for first grade; 45 for second grade; 39 for third grade; 49 for fourth grade; 38 for fifth grade; and 25 for sixth grade.
Enrollment will be first-come, first-served. No applicants will be turned away; instead, they will be placed on a waiting list, Scholl said.
Trustee President Susan Dell’Osso, who is the project director of the River Islands community development, said she did not want to cap the enrollment yet. She preferred to have a special board meeting to discuss final numbers before letters are sent to parents.
Additional presentations about the charter have been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. March 19 and 9:20 a.m. March 20. Both presentations will be at the Dell’Osso Family Farm Country Store, 501 S. Manthey Road, in Lathrop.
Officials have also scheduled registration from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. March 11, 13 and 18 at the charter trailer behind the River Islands office, 73 W. Steward Road.
