Demolition of the structure, which was declared unsafe for occupancy, began Tuesday, Dec. 18, and shut down lanes of 11th Street and Holly Drive both days.
Contreras said the demolition crew needed to change its approach when the walls closest to Holly Drive and 11th Street showed potential instability late Tuesday. In response, the crews devised a tactic to stabilize the remaining walls while pushing them toward what used to be the center of the building.
Streets are still expected to be closed Thursday, Dec. 20, and cleanup of the demolished structure erected in 1914 is expected to continue for several days.
