Two local tennis players won their league singles titles this week at their respective championship tournaments.
Kimball High sophomore Garrett Chun beat Manteca High’s Yok Jing-Ma in a three-set, 2 1/2 hour match, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, in Thursday’s final at Weston Ranch High School.
Kimball coach Danette McDaniel reported that Chun suffered a severe nosebleed in the first set and was trailing 0-3. He continued to play with his nostril stuffed with tissue and came from behind to win the first set 6-4. He dropped the second set, then played a close third to win the title, his second in a row after winning the VOL singles title as a freshman.
West High senior Jahan Viejh won the Tri-City Athletic League singles championship on Friday at the Tri-City Athletic League tournament at In-Shape, Marina, in Stockton. Viejh beat Tokay High’s Johnny Morales 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the final.
Also winning their TCAL championship was West’s doubles team of senior Peter Creasman and sophomore Abhi Thube. They beat McNair High’s No. 1 team 6-4, 6-2 in the final.
The league champions now head to the Sac-Joaquin Section individual championship tournaments on Thursday, May 8, at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville. Viejh, Creasman and Thube compete in the Division I tournament, and Chun competes in the Division II tournament.
Also heading to the Division II tournament is the Kimball High doubles team of senior Mark Dalupan and sophomore Ivan Acosta. They finished as Valley Oak League runners-up after they made the final, but lost in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 2-6, to Mike Lopez and Alex Vazquez of Manteca.
The Sac-Joaquin Section team playoffs also begin next week, with three local teams in post-season play. Tracy High (6-4 San Joaquin Athletic Association) heads to Lodi on Monday to face Tokay.

Kimball (13-1 Valley Oak League), the co-champion of the VOL and No. 2 seed from the league, will host Florin High of the Metropolitan Conference on Tuesday.
