Tracy High will send four of its golfers to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South tournament after the Bulldogs’ third-place team finish in the San Joaquin Athletic Association.
Tracy went into the SJAA championship tournament Monday at Lockeford Springs Golf Course with an 8-2 record in SJAA matches, which placed the Bulldogs second behind Lodi High (9-1).
Final league standings were a combination of league meets during the season and the tournament outcome. Lodi finished as league champion with a first-place team score of 409 on Monday . Lincoln High’s second-place team score of 411, combined with a 7-3 league record, pushed it into a tie for second place with Tracy, which had a team score of 438 on Monday.
Tracy and Lincoln played a tiebreaker, adding up the five best scores for each team on the par-4 first hole. Lincoln’s team shot an even-par 20 and Tracy had a two-over-par 22, giving Lincoln runner-up status and a chance to take its full team to the Division I South tournament Monday at Elkhorn Golf Club.
The leading golfer for Tracy was junior Jared Finney, who shot 79 on the par-72 course and will compete in the Division I South tournament. Finney said he had a good round, but he had plenty of opportunities to make it much better.
“I only had one three-putt,” Finney said. “I had like six birdie chances and missed them all, so my round was just pars and bogeys. It was kind of frustrating.”
Three more Tracy players are also advancing based on their scores at the league meet: junior Talon Simmons, 84, sophomore Gavin Bean, 85, and senior Shivam Swamy, 86.
West High’s team (7-3 Tri-City Athletic League) finished in third place in the TCAL behind St. Mary’s and Tokay and is also sending four golfers to the Division I South tournament.
Contributing to West’s team score of 463 were seniors Austin Smith (87), senior Mark Olson (91), senior Nick Carrera (91) and senior Garrett Morris (96), who all advance to the division tournament.
Team scores for St. Mary’s and Tokay were not available.
Kimball High, which went 6-8 during the league season, placed third at the Valley Oak League tournament Tuesday at Micke Grove Golf Links in Lodi.
Sonora (433) led the league meet, and second place went to East Union (437). Kimball tied with Oakdale (461) but got third place because its No. 6 golfer, sophomore Mathew Jaurique (103), beat Oakdale’s No. 6 (115).
The VOL will be represented in the SJS Division IV tournament Monday at Manteca Park Golf Course by league champion Sonora, as well as East Union and Sierra, based on their average scores through the season.
Kimball’s division qualifiers are junior Reese Maxfield and freshman Chris Maxfield. They advanced based their average scores over nine holes through the league season. Reese Maxfield averaged 40.75 strokes and Chris Maxfield averaged 44.9 strokes.
