Boys basketball: West wins in Turlock

West took the lead in the second quarter and held on for a 63-58 win at Turlock High on Monday, Dec. 10.

The Wolf Pack (6-2) had a 47-38 lead going into the fourth quarter when Turlock (8-2) went on a scoring run.

West senior DeAndre Thompson hit a couple key free throws to give West the momentum to finish strong while senior Obrien Nnaji’s rebounds kept West in control. Thompson finished the night with 19 points, junior Kenneth Daye tallied 20 and senior Justin Saar scored 12 on four 3-pointers.

West boys second at Macres Tournament

The West High varsity boys finished the Mark Macres Tournament in Elk Grove in second place with a 77-55 loss to Pleasant Grove on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Senior Michael Young led West’s offense with 16 points for the night and junior Kenneth Daye scored 13. The tournament was held at Monterey Trail High in Elk Grove.

West overcame a 54-46 third-quarter deficit for a 67-61 win over Foothill on Friday, Dec. 7.

Daye scored 22 and senior Justin Saar recorded 15. The Wolf Pack also made a fourth-quarter comeback in a 62-59 win on Thursday, Dec. 6, against Monterey Trail.

DeAndre Thompson scored 17 points for the night and Justin Saar scored 13.

Daye and Saar were both named to the all-tournament team.

Kimball wins consolation at Granada Tournament

The Jaguars came back from a first-round loss to win the consolation final at the Granada Tournament in Livermore, held Thursday, Dec. 6, through Saturday, Dec. 8.

Kimball (4-3) beat Ripon, 64-55, in Saturday’s consolation final. Senior Alex Toledo, an all-tournament selection, scored 18 points while Senion Chandler Alves tallied 15.

Alves scored 23 points in Friday’s 68-58 win over Arroyo. Kimball fell to the host team, Granada, 90-87 in overtime on Thursday.

Toledo scored 27 points in that game, including five 3-pointers. Derek Van de Streek scored 17 on Thursday, Evan Owens scored 15, and DeVante Baisa scored 11.

Kimball freshmen win Lathrop Tournament

Kimball High’s freshmen (7-0) kept up their early season winning streak at the Lathrop Tournament Thursday, Dec. 6, through Saturday, Dec. 8, at Lathrop High.

The Jaguars opened with a 36-34 overtime win over East Union on Thursday, and continued with a 76-68 win over Modesto Christian on Friday, Dec. 7.

The Jaguars won the tournament championship 41-34 over Manteca.

Rubin Mann totaled 49 points during the three-game tournament while Apnoor Gill accumulated 43 points.

West freshman boys at Edison Holiday Classic

West’s boys finished the Edison Holiday Classic tournament with a 71-67 win over Edison on Saturday, Dec. 8, in Stockton.

The win followed a 71-67 loss to McNair on Friday, Dec. 7, and a 49-37 loss to Calaveras on Thursday, Dec. 6. Niles James scored 39 points for West over the three-day tournament, and Sukie Sra scored 22 for the tournament.
