Tracy High junior Druce Asah led the Bulldog boys basketball team’s offense in a 68-56 win over visiting Franklin High of Stockton to open the San Joaquin Athletic Association season on Wednesday, Jan. 15.

Asah scored 10 points in the first quarter alone as the Bulldogs (9-6, 1-0 SJAA) took a 19-7 lead, and by the end of the night, he had a team-high 19 points. Senior Josh Brakkee (13 points) got in on the action in the second and third quarters, and senior Devin Foster scored 12 points on the night, including 10 in a 27-point third quarter that put the Bulldogs up 60-34.

Franklin (1-15, 0-1 SJAA) outscored Tracy in the fourth quarter, but not nearly enough to threaten Tracy’s lead. Coach Junior Cueva said he took advantage of the chance to give his backup players some game time.

Even so, the coach said he wouldn’t take any SJAA opponent for granted.

“If we want to be one of the top two teams, we’re going to have to bring it every game and focus on not turning the ball over,” Cueva said.

West 80, McNair 48

The West High Wolf Pack opened Tri-City Athletic League play with a win at McNair High in Stockton on Wednesday, Jan. 15.

West (12-6, 1-0 TCAL) led early and dominated the second quarter for a 42-24 lead at the half.

Senior Kenneth Daye kept up a steady pace on offense to lead the Wolf Pack with 29 points. Senior Anthony Ross scored 11 points, and senior Kenny Thompson scored eight.

Excel Academy 49, Delta Charter 45

A back-and-forth game ended in a nonleague loss at home as the Delta Charter Dragons (11-4, 3-1 Mountain Valley League) gave way to Excel Academy’s outside shooting and free throws Wednesday, Jan. 15.

The Pumas (4-9) went 11 for 22 from the free-throw line, compared with 5 for 15 from the line for the Dragons. Coach Eric Ragsdale said the numbers were typical of the cold shooting that held the Dragons back in the first and fourth quarters.

Junior Dramell Pitts led the Delta Charter offense with16 points. Senior Jordan Thornton scored 13, including three 3-point shots.

Manteca 59, Kimball 51

The Jaguars nailed their outside shots in a fourth-quarter effort to overcome Valley Oak League opponent Manteca’s 36-33 third-quarter lead Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Kimball High.

Kimball (12-4, 2-1 VOL) benefited from four outside shots in the fourth, including two by senior Ben Juarez, who had five 3-pointers among his team-high 19 points.

But those successes couldn’t compensate for Manteca’s opportunities from the free-throw line. The Buffaloes (10-6, 2-1 VOL) hit 14 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Also scoring for Kimball were senior Jonah Laguana with eight points and senior J.D. Schmidt and junior Jhordin Mellion with seven each.

Kimball had taken a step forward in the VOL with a 61-59 win at Oakdale on Jan. 9. Undaunted by Oakdale’s 29-21 halftime lead, the Jaguars closed in during the third quarter and outscored the Mustangs 22-14 in the final frame. Juarez scored 17 points, Schmidt scored 15 and Laguana scored 13.
