This weekend, Tracy plays host to a festival celebrating a hearty foodstuff for the 24th time.

The Tracy Dry Bean Festival, beginning early Saturday, Sept. 11, will take over downtown Tracy, where dried legumes, rib-sticking food and local entertainment will hold court until the party wraps up early Sunday evening.

On Saturday, the fun kicks off at 8 a.m. with 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer runs that leave from City Hall.

Also at 8 a.m. Saturday, registration opens for the annual car show on 10th Street, where bikes, classic rides and modern customs will compete for various trophies, including special picks by the mayor and police chief.

The fun continues — including music, stage shows and plenty of food and drink — until 7 p.m.

On Sunday, the celebration resumes at 10 a.m. The day’s activities include a chili cook-off, a contest that pits the town’s best pizzas against one another, and more music and entertainment.

The festival closes at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Vendors will sell food, beverages and various crafts all day both days, and the Bean Town Pavilion — the centerpiece showcasing the reason for the festival — will be open to all. At the pavilion, visitors can buy rare variations of dried beans, sample seven bean-based dishes (plus a bean ice cream dessert) for $7, and can learn about the history, farming and processing of dried legumes.

There’s also a carnival area with rides and midway games, as well as a special zone for kids to have fun.

There’s no entrance fee for the bean fest, and parking can be found downtown on Sixth Street and on the various streets surrounding the festival.

The only problem with the Bean Festival was all the hot-air being propagated unto the unsuspecting populace by half of the wannabe candidates.

Half the candidates appear wet-behind-the-ears with bankrupt talking points. These candidates are standing near all the *NEW* coffee shops and other businesses saying, "we need "change in Tracy".

I told one of them to look around at the crossing walks, businesses, and nicer streets. I got the impression they weren't listening.

And in the end, they just went back to their unreasonable talking points. Making absurd claims and demands about Tracy's history and future.

I asked (to be sure) what is "change" to you. And they insisted the answer was, "change". This is known as "circular logic". And it felt just like talking to a brick wall.

I hate to say it, but I'm afraid half of them are little more than puppets with the same intellectually-void, script writer.

I spent about an hour and a half at the festival. It was A LOT better than last year's! The drinks and food (and even goodies) were expensive but it is a once a year thing, I guess. WE have to remember everything is expensive now.

People were nice and everything, but the sad thing is that I did not see anyone I know (or vice versa). I saw one friend and her daughter when I first got there which made me think I would see tons of friends, but I was dead wrong. I saw my boss and co employees so that is an up. The disappointment felt is only personal.

The weather is not as hot as it was last year, so I am thankful for that. It was still hot and the trees are still so small. Shade was hard to find which is a down point on the festival. Next week it is supposed to cool off.

I wouldnt go if it were not free. The bean festival is fun but all the stuff there is so overpriced. The wife an I just bring plenty of water and our own food that way it doesnt cost an arm and a leg.

We just got back from this years event and it was enjoyable. The dried bean tent was the best part. As for the rest of the booths, unfortunatly most of them had little if anything to do with dried beans. I wish they would just get rid of all the random commercial booths. What does sunset fencing, airsoft guns, or larry hite have to do with dried beans?

I love that the Bean Festival is free...unless you want to sample the beans.
