The Rams (14-4, 3-0 TCAL) got five runners on base without the benefit of any base hits to start the first inning and scored two runs before Charlie Gaff singled to drive in two more in a 12-2 win over the Wolf Pack (3-7, 2-1 TCAL).
“We uncharacteristically let people on base against a team that puts the ball in play, and you can’t do that,” said West coach Roger Gallardon. “We’ve got to keep people off the bases and give ourselves a chance, and that was the breakdown. We’ve competed against teams that can hit the ball, so there’s no shell shock.”
West got a quick start in the bottom of the first with two walks and a batter hit by a pitch, was followed by a double down the left field line from Nick Gandall that brought in two runs. It was the only offensive bright spot for the Wolf Pack, which had only three more base hits in the game.
The Rams collected eight total hits and exploited four West errors that led to a 9-2 lead after four. A three-run sixth inning ended the game early on the 10-run rule.
Mitch Cowles started on the mound for West, went two innings and faced two more batters in the third. He gave up seven runs on three hits, with four walks and two batters hit by pitches, to take the loss.
Cody Blackburn faced three batters, gave up an unearned run and a hit and got one out, and Kevin Oetken pitched 3 2/3 innings to finish the game giving up four runs, two of them earned, on four hits, and four strikeouts.
Hits for West included two singles for Jalen Ransome and a single for Chase Martinez. Winning pitcher was the Rams’ Joey Caffese.
St. Mary’s won the sophomore game 16-0. West had three base hits, including a double and a single for Austin Mayes and a single for Aaron Fronda, but the St. Mary’s defense got them out on the bases. Michael Alameda, Tyler Durant and A.J. Lowe pitched for West.
Millennium 16, Stone Ridge Christian 6
The Falcons won in six innings against visiting Stone Ridge Christian of Merced on Wednesday, April 18, at the Tracy Learning Center.
Millennium had 16 hits for the day, including a triple and two singles for Gavin Compton, who also batted in three runs. Daniel Yanez singled and doubled, Jose Avila had two hits and two stolen bases, Chris Espinosa tripled and Joe Bains also had two hits.
Avila, Compton, Tanner Carroll and Drew Carroll all pitched, and left fielder Chris Espinosa made two catches to deny the Knights base hits. The win puts the Falcons at 14-5 overall and 6-0 in the Central California Athletic Alliance.
Kimball 9, Weston Ranch 6
Kimball (7-4,3-4 VOL) had a 9-0 lead in the sixth inning before the Cougars (5-9, 2-4 VOL) started to put up some runs in the bottom of the sixth on Wednesday, April 18, at Weston Ranch.
Kimball starting pitcher Cody Wagner pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed a two earned runs on a hit and five walks, and also struck out 10 batters. Zack Johnson pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up four hits and three earned runs. Nathan Van Katwyk finished the seventh inning and faced two batters for two outs.
Blake Cichella had a hit and batted in two runs, Kris Bartlett, Ricardo Arias and Nathan Van Katwyk each had a hit and an RBI, and Cody Arledge also had a hit.
