Millennium High is hosting its fifth annual Augie Vierra Memorial Tournament at the Tracy Learning Center this week. Last year, the Falcons designated the event as a junior varsity tournament, and this year the event brings four teams together for three days of baseball.
Millennium coach Drew Reyes said that the team made the change in order to build up the Falcons' junior varsity schedule.
“It’s important to get these kids as many games as we can,” he said, noting that Millennium’s league, the Central California Athletic Alliance, has only two other schools, Elliot Christian of Lodi and Big Valley Christian of Modesto, with JV teams.
This week’s tournament includes the Falcons, the Kimball High sophomore team, the West High freshman team, and the Pittsburg High junior varsity team. Millennium played Pittsburg and Kimball on Monday, and will play West on Tuesday. Kimball and Pittsburg also play on Tuesday.
Pittsburg 7, Millennium 2
The Falcons had a 2-1 lead going into the sixth inning, which is when the Pittsburg team collected three hits and two walks and scored five runs. Millennium scored in the fourth when Giacomo Oliveri singled, his second hit for the day, and scored on a passed ball. Jordan DeWitt singled, advanced on a passed ball and an infield error, and scored on a bases-loaded walk. Manjot Atwal pitched all seven innings for Millennium and gave up seven hits and struck out six for the loss.
Kimball 9, Millennium 5
The Falcons had a 4-2 lead after the first inning, but Trevor Trew’s tripled anchored the Jaguars’ five-run rally in the fourth. Trew was Kimball’s starting pitcher and gave up four runs, three of them earned, on one hit and four walks, with two batters hit by pitches. Matt Rodriguez finished the game for Kimball and gave up one run for the win. He struck out seven batters and allowed five hits. Millennium’s Daniel Gutierrez pitched all seven innings and allowed eight hits and six walks for the loss.
Kimball’s Trew had two hits, Ryan King also tripled, and Zach Orr, Kyle Riley and Anthony Rizzo also had hits. Millennium’s Eddie Diaz doubled and singled, and Manjot Atwal, Giacomo Oliveri, Daniel Gutierrez, Malik Charles, Jose Albornoz and Jake Adams also had hits for the Falcons.
Tracy 16, Chavez 3
The Bulldog baseball team (14-3, 6-0 SJAA) made short work of the visiting Chavez team (5-11, 0-5 SJAA) on Monday at Tracy High, riding a 12-run third inning to the 16-3 win.
Starting pitcher John Jaeger went all five innings and gave up three runs on three hits for the win. He struck out six and walked three.
Leading Tracy at the plate was Jonah Wesely, who doubled twice and singled and drove in four runs for the day. Matt Loscavio, Tanner Turner and Dustin Dibble each had two base hits, Chase Johnson doubled, and Jaeger, Devon Denholm, David Miranda and Jake Shull also had hits.
Sophomores: Tracy 14, Chavez 1
Tracy starting pitcher Josh Brakkee pitched all five innings for Tracy and allowed one , three hits and a walk and struck out nine batters for the win. He also made four infield plays to put out Chavez batters. The Bulldogs got 10 hits, including three for Aaron Denholm, a three-run triple for Anthony Nunez, two hits for Michael Motyka, and Brakkee also batted in three runs.
Tracy coach Ryan Hern added that his team also benefitted from several walks, making it 34 bases on balls for his team in the last three games.
“I’m hoping in the next few games we can see some better pitching to help prepare us for the following weeks with Lodi and Lincoln,” Hern said.
Tracy 9, Stagg 1
Two home runs boosted Tracy to a 9-1 win at Stagg High on Saturday, April 7. Jonah Wesely hits a solo homer and doubled, and Jake Shull homered, singled and batted in three. Tracy had eight hits in all, including two for Cody Daniel, who also batted in two, and hits for Tanner Turner and Matt Loscavio.
Starting pitcher Reilly Oki went five innings for the win. He gave up one run on three hits. Jake Shull pitched one inning and struck out all three batters that he faced, and Jordan Kirby also faced just three batters.
Sophomores: Tracy 10, Stagg 1
Tracy High’s sophomore baseball team traveled to Stockton for 10-1 win over Stagg. David Hinson took the hill for the first time this year and allowed one run on two hits, with one strikeout, plus two walks and two hit batters, over three innings for the win. C.J. Butcher came in for relief and no runs or hits over three innings, struck out three and walked four. Closing pitcher Clayton Fegett, also pitching for the first time this year, allowed no hits or runs, struck out one, and walked one.
The Bulldogs scored 10 runs off of seven hits and 12 walks. Fegett doubled, singled and batted in five runs, Steven Schreppel had two hits and an RBI, and Hinson, Michael Motyka, and Butcher had one hit each.
Sophomores: Kimball 7, Sierra 0
Ryan King gave up two hits, a walk and no runs as he pitched all seven innings on Thursday for a 7-0 win at home against Sierra. One of those Sierra hits in the fourth inning had the potential to score a run, but center fielder Sammy Duran made the throw to catcher Zach Orr to catch the Sierra runner trying to score and end the inning. King also had two hits and Orr, Trevor Trew and Junior Romero also had hits.
Sophomores: Sierra 3, Kimball 2
The Timberwolves broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning in Manteca Wednesday with a walk-off single. Before that it was a tight game with both teams having to work hard for their runs. Trevor Trew gave up two runs, one of them earned, and six hits and struck out 11 batters for the loss. Kimball had six hits, including a double for Ryan King plus a sacrifice fly, and Dylan Davis, Brennan Bowman, Zach Orr, Sammy Duran and Junior Romero also had hits.
