Adella Robb Shafer, 105, a former English teacher and counselor at Tracy High, died Friday, July 20, at home in San Francisco.

Born April 22, 1907, in Topeka, Kan., she was a 1930 graduate of Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., and taught English, Latin and drama at Washburn High School.

She and her husband, the late George Shafer, an engineer with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, lived in Green Mountain Dam, Colo., and Estes Park, Colo., before coming to Tracy in 1949.

Mrs. Shafer taught English and was a counselor at Tracy High School for 15 years. In 1969, she and her husband retired to San Mateo and later lived at the Sequoias in San Francisco.

An avid reader and student of the meaning of words, Mrs. Shafer researched her family’s genealogy and was an ardent supporter of projects enabling women to help themselves.

Survivors include a daughter, Judith Dodge of Los Altos; a granddaughter; and two great-grandsons.

Preceding her in death was her husband, George Shafer, who died in 1993.
