A Sunday concert will showcase the talents of students from local music schools.
The second Janis Horizon Music Band Concert features young musicians from Tracy, Modesto and Ripon. Each of the kids was either a student of Janis’ Horizon Music of Modesto or the Tracy Music Center, and has taken lessons anywhere from eight months to eight years.
There are more than 70 8- to 18–years–olds who will perform in 12 bands.
"They are so good, and some have only been taking lessons for eight months," said concert volunteer Kathy Gray, the mother of one of the kids in band Parallel Avenue.
Ten of the bands were started about 3½ months ago, but the bands were not actually chosen by the students. Teachers and those in charge of the concert looked at all the students who were interested and eligible and put them together based on skill level and style.
The other two bands, Faded Dreams and the aforementioned Parallel Avenue, were formed at last year’s concert. The two did so well that they never disbanded. Each now has their own album, and both will be available at the concert.
"The kids have become great musicians," said Gray.
The bands will perform in different styles in accordance to their preferences, such as classic rock, alternative, blues, jazz and funk.
