East Union 3, Tracy 0

The Tracy team (1-2) showed stretches where players could keep up with the Lancers from East Union High of Manteca, but the Lancers were able to sustain their scoring runs to stay in the lead for most of the night, and gave East Union the win, 25-18, 25-13, 25-13.

Kills from Haley Ochoa, who had seven kills for the night, kept the Lady Bulldogs competitive in the first game. Tracy started with the lead in the second game on aces from Lynsie Zellmer, who also had nine kills for the night. At the end a series of aces, kills and hitting errors on Tracy pushed the Lancers into the lead.

The third game was more passing and hitting errors on Tracy, with the occasional kills from Zellmer, Ochoa and strong play at the net from Jenny Barwig, who had 19 assists. The Lancers ended up being more aggressive at the net, and even with strong defense on Tracy’s side, with Briana Aldridge collecting seven digs for the night, Brianna Warner with five digs in all and Ochoa with six digs for the match, the Lancers still surged ahead for the win.

That last set showed Tracy coach Mahina Tankersley what the tougher competitors bring to their matches.

“I told my girls, we have to learn to cover and I think that’s what we’re going to be practicing. They had some good hitters,” she said. “I keep reverting back to our energy and demeanor. We could have played so much closer, if not even beat that team. Once their demeanor changes we start to win.”

Tracy’s sophomores lost 2-1, and the freshmen lost 2-0 with set scores of 25-27, 20-25.

Next match for Tracy will be at West High on Thursday, with freshmen at 4 p.m., sophomores at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6 p.m.

Wolf Pack Classic Varsity Tournament

The volleyball team from Lincoln High of Stockton claimed first place in the 2010 Wolf Pack Classic Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 4, at West High. The Trojans won all six of their games in the round-robin portion as they beat McNair, Kimball and St. Elizabeth Black in a series of two-game matches. Lincoln went on to beat McNair in the semifinal of the championship bracket and beat second-place Heritage High of Brentwood in two games in the best-of-three championship match.

West took third place after the Wolf Pack girls finished as the top seed from their pool with wins over Sierra and St. Elizabeth Red and a tie with Sierra. West then played Heritage in the semifinal, dropping the first game 17-25, and playing the second game to 25-27, with Heritage winning to move on to the final.

Tracy was the third seed from its pool, which included Heritage as the first seed. Tracy lost two to Heritage and split with Edison and Manteca. Tracy went on to beat St. Elizabeth Red in the first round of consolation, and lost to Merced in the second round. Merced then beat Edison in the consolation final.

Kimball High was the third seed out of its four-team pool, after the Jaguars lost to Lincoln and McNair and split with St. Elizabeth Red. Kimball then lost to Manteca in the first round of the consolation bracket.

Soccer: Tracy 3, Tokay 1

Tracy High’s soccer team won another pre-league game on Tuesday at Central School, beating the Tokay Tigers 3-1.

Tracy scored five minutes in on a shot from Abram Diaz, who was positioned in the middle of the field when Eric Bui passed the ball in from the left and Diaz fired it into the right corner.

It was good insurance as a quick Tokay offense kept the pressure on Tracy through the first half, taking three shots on goal, each blocked by Bulldog goalkeeper Josh Wesely, before taking a shot from the right side into the left side of the goal in the 25th minute. It’s the only goal scored against Tracy this season. Wesely blocked six shots in all, and was also there to collect Tokay’s cross shots.

“The team was working well together,” Wesely said. “We had a couple good plays, and also played some good defense from Kyle Devlin and Sam Ebert. We played good as a team.”

Devlin, the teams sweeper, said that improvements moving the ball gives the Bulldog team the advantage.

“We’re getting better chemistry and one-touch passing near the goal,” he said. “We’ve still got some things to work on, some finishing touches before league starts. We’ll be good though.”

Tracy took the lead back 21 minutes into the second half when Cameron Divoky came up the middle and passed the ball ahead to Eric Bui, who got past Tokay’s defenders for a shot into the right side of the net. Three minutes later Tracy scored another after taking a corner kick from the left side. Tracy wasn’t able to get a clear shot out of it until the ball rebounded to center midfielder Byron Munoz, who was on the right side of the goal and in position to score when the ball came to him.

He said the ball deflected off a couple Tokay defenders before it came to him, and when it did he saw that the right side of the goal was wide open. He also credits his team’s success to its ability to keep the ball moving between players.

“We’re definitely touching the ball better, with one-two passes, sending those through balls to our forwards.”

Tracy plays again on Thursday, Sept. 9, against Sierra at Central School. The JV plays at 3:30 p.m. and the varsity at 5 p.m.
