Volleyball
Sierra 3, Tracy 0
Tracy High’s second match of the season Thursday was a contest of which team could come back from a deficit, and make it hold until the end.
The visiting Sierra High Timberwolves were the players who would hold off the Lady Bulldogs’ comeback attempts in the first set, and Sierra made its own comebacks in the second set after Tracy briefly held the advantage a couple of times. Sierra stayed just out of reach in the third set to take the win.
Outside hitter Angela Mariani was one of the keys to getting Tracy back in the game each time Sierra took the lead. She recorded nine kills for the night and also had five digs. Middle hitter Jazmin Clarke, a freshman, had four kills and senior middle hitter Lynsie Zellmer had four kills. Jenny Barwig had 21 assists, and Briana Aldridge had six digs.
“I think we really worked hard this game,” Zellmer said. “For a lot of these girls it’s their first time playing on varsity.”
She and coach Mahina Tankersley both said that the team has to keep its morale up even when it’s behind.
“We just need to learn how to cheer it up, pick up our energy and fight back a little harder,” Zellmer said.
Tankersley said that energy level was probably the difference between Sierra and Tracy on Thursday.
“We let them score a bunch of points, and by that time our spirits are down and to try to get fired up is playing catch-up. That doesn’t work too well. They need to come out with fire in their eyes from the beginning.”
Tracy’s sophomores (2-0) won the first set, lost the second set 17-25 and 15-9 in the third set, with strong serving from Julia Jurado and Aspen Alves. The freshmen (0-2) lost in two, 14-25, 18-25.

In the 72nd minute the Hawks scored on a short shot, and with a minute left the Hawks broke the tie on a long kick that bounced high over the Kimball goalkeeper, but a Liberty Ranch player was there to head it in.
