Local Roundup: Karate team excels at Ontario meet

The Team X-Out competitive martial arts team of Tracy faced top international competition in the 23rd annual North American Sport Karate Association Compete Nationals from Feb. 26 to 28 at the Ontario Convention Center.

Zachary Gaona, competing in the 8-year-old advanced division, won first place in both open and traditional forms and earned a fourth-place finish in fighting. He went on to be named Grand Champion for traditional forms.

Tyler Doan, in the 10-year-old NASKA Black-Belt division, placed third in fighting, fourth in traditional weapons and sixth in traditional forms. First-place finishes in fighting went to Conner Miller, 12- to 13-year-old intermediate division; Tyler Sousa, 14- to 15-year-old beginner division; Cameron Dias, 16- to 17-year-old intermediate division; and Justin Miller, 14- to 15-year-old NASKA Black-Belt.

Cheer gym claims top awards

Athletic Perfection All-Star cheer gym of Tracy took home three championships from a Cheersport competition over the weekend at University of the Pacific in Stockton.

The gym’s Senior 5 open, Small Junior 3 and Small Junior 2 teams all won first place in their divisions.

The Senior 5 team also took home the Best of Level 5 award. The team of 13 members competes against others with more than 25 athletes.

“They far exceed the stunting expectations for a team of their size,” said Andrea Cuestas, Athletic Perfection head coach.

The Youth 1 team received second place out of six teams. The gym’s Tiny team finished second, and the Junior 1 team finished fourth in their respective divisions.

All teams will compete again March 13 at the NCA Nor Cal Classic in Sacramento.

Gymnasts compete in Fremont

The boys team at Classic Gymnastics competed at the Top Flight Invitational competition Saturday and Sunday at Top Flight Gymnastics in Fremont. The local team turned out some of its best performances of the season against some of the toughest competition it has faced, coaches said.

Level 4: Joshua Burdios, age 8, placed 15th on floor exercise, 18th on pommel horse, 18th on still rings, 12th on vault table, 14th on parallel bars, 13th on horizontal bar and 17th all-around. Matthew Garay, age 8, placed 12th on floor exercise, 14th on pommel horse, 10th on still rings, third on vault table, 14th on parallel bars, 14th on horizontal bar, and 14th all-around.

Level 5: Cameron Higgins, age 8, placed sixth on floor exercise, sixth on pommel horse, eighth on still rings, fourth on vault table, sixth on parallel bars, eighth on horizontal bar, and eighth all-around. Elijah Souza, age 10, placed 16th on floor exercise, 14th on pommel horse, 17th on still rings, 17th on vault table, 12th on parallel bars, 14th on horizontal bar, and 16th all-around.

The team’s Level 4 gymnasts will finish their season at state championships March 13 in Visalia, and the Level 5 gymnasts will try to qualify for state March 21 in Petaluma.
